An Overview of the SuperSight Surgery Procedure
Diagnosis :
you have been diagnosed with presbyopia (aging of eyesight) with myopia (near-sightedness) or hyperopia ( far-sightedness ) with or without cataract.
SuperSight Surgery Described :
The purpose of the SuperSight Surgery is to replace the natural lens with a plastic, special-designed accommodative intraocular lens (implant) inside your eye to correct the condition known as presbyopia (aging of the eye) which occurs in most people after age 40 so they might not require to wear reading glasses for close-up work.
With topical or local anesthesia you will be awake during the operation. This may consist simply of eye drop or injecting local anesthetic solution into the tissue surrounding the eye. You might be able to see a bright light from operating microscope. Two hours before the operation, you will be given eye drops to enlarge the pupil.
during the operation you will be asked to keep your head still, and lie as flat as possible. the operation normally takes 20-30 minutes for one eye, but may take up to 45-60minutes. most the natural lens are removed by technique called phacoemulsification. the surgeon makes a very small cut in the eye, softens the lens with sound waves and removes it through a small tube. the back layer of the lens is left behind. an artificial lens (implant) is then inserted to replace the natural lens. sometimes a small stitch is put in the eye. at the end of the operation, a pad or shield may be put over your eye to protect it.
Pre- and Post-Treatment Care
Before the SuperSight Surgery
- If it is possible that you have any serious systemic disease, you should consult your doctor and notify Dr. Somchai.
- You should inform Dr. Somchai of any medications you may be taking, so as to account for the risk of allergic reactions, drug reactions, and other potential complications during the SuperSight Surgery and subsequent treatment.
Post Treatment Precautions
- Eye Protection : Avoid exposing the eye to tap water in the bath or shower, as such non-sterile water may expose the eye to increase risks of infection. Avoid rubbing the eye. The eye may be more fragile to trauma from impact. Evidence has show that, as with any other scar, the corneal incision will not be as strong after healing as the original cornea was at the site of the incision. Therefore, the eye is somewhat more vulnerable to all varieties of injuries, at least for the first year after surgery. It is advisable to wear protective eye wear when engaging in contact or racquet sport or other activities in which the possibility of a ball, projectile, elbow, fist or other traumatizing object contacting the eye may be high.
- After surgery, you may experience starburst-like images or halos around the lights, your depth perception may be slightly altered, and image sizes may appear slightly different. Some of these conditions may affect your ability to drive and judge distances. Driving should only be done when you are certain that your vision is adequate.
The amount of pain and discomfort that can be expected soon after the procedure varies with individual. You should expect that the eye will be tender and sore to some extent after the surgery. Immediately after the procedure vision will be blurry, and you may experience some redness and/or corneal edema (swelling of the cornea). Some patients report the sensation of a foreign object in the eye.
Limits of SuperSight Surgery : Although the goal of SuperSight Surgery is to improve vision to the point of not being dependent on glasses or contact lenses, or to the point of wearing thinner (weaker) glasses, the patients should have real expectation.
Contraindications :
SuperSight Surgery should not be performed on persons :
- who don’t want to have surgery
- who satisfy their functional vision
- who have uncontrolled or advanced ocular disease
- who have amblyopia ( lazy eye )
- who have uncontrolled or advanced systemic disease
- who are immune compromised or on drug or therapy that suppress the immune system
- who anxious, demanding or persons with expectation difficulties
If you know that you have any of these conditions, you should inform Dr. Somchai. In addition, if you have any other concerns or possible conditions that might affect your decision to undertake SuperSight Surgery, you should discuss them with Dr. Somchai.
Risks of Not Undergoing SuperSight Surgery : The risks of not having the surgery are limited to those associated with your current visual condition. These include but are not limited to the dangers that may be associated with losing glasses or contact lenses, and the risks of trauma to the eye cause by breakage of plastic spectacles or contact lenses in the eye.
